location: Long Beach, California, USA
date: 31 March 1983
length: 42 minutes

HERE
Choices of covers for the encore is dubious at best, but otherwise an excellent recording of an excellent set.

SUBHUMANS

artist: SUBHUMANS (Warminster, West Wiltshire, ENGLAND)
venue: Warminster Athenaeum Arts Centre
location: Warminster, West Wiltshire, ENGLAND
date: 10 November 1985
length: 72 minutes

This was the "262nd and Final Gig" before SUBHUMANS split (they've likely played three times that number since reforming for good in 1998). A loose and fiery set that features "From The Cradle To The Grave" and sounds every bit as important and relevant as it did 34 years ago.

RAMONES

artist: RAMONES (New York City, New York, USA)
venue: CBGB's
location: New York City, New ork, USA
date: 31 March 1977
length: 34 minutes

HERE
Solidifying my belief that RAMONES are wholly overrated, this "Leave Home"-era set blows up the "full speed ahead, all go/no slow, rapid fire" myth. Ballads, pauses between songs, essentially a mid-paced affair all around. Things pick up for the last several tracks, but I'd probably have already been outside drinking beer on the sidewalk by the time they got to the good stuff. Don't get me wrong, RAMONES are fine, but....

X-RAY SPEX

artist: X-RAY SPEX (London, England)
venue: OGWT
location: London, England
date: ?? 1978
length: 11 minutes

HERE
Three song television performance ripped in moderate (at best) fidelity. East to forget how great these songs are/were, and worth noting that "Art I Ficial" sounds really slow here, and it gives it a pretty surprising groove.

SUBTERFUGE

artist: SUBTERFUGE (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA)
venue: ??
location: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
date: ?? 1983
length: 38 minutes

HERE
A full nine minutes of this set are wasted with blathering between songs - of course the DL is more than worth the effort just for the banter and heckling. The cops interrupt the show near then end, which is also a joy. REZILLOS (by way of FLEETWOOD MAC) cover is a plus.

RUNNING RAGGED // SELF DESTRUCT

artist: RUNNING RAGGED // SELF DESTRUCT (??? // Walnut Creek, California, USA)
venue: Mission Records
location: San Francisco, California, USA
date: 17 March 2001
length: 59 minutes

HERE
Two sets from two bands I've never heard of (and still haven't aside from this recording). This download starts with a 17 minute untitled track capturing the banter in the room before the show started. If you were alive then, or alive then...you realize that these are important sounds. Many ghosts on that track.

RUDIMENTARY PENI

artist: RUDIMENTARY PENI (London, ENGLAND)
venue: Norwich Road Church Hall
location: Forest Gate (London suburbs), ENGLAND
date: 16 January 1982
length: 35 minutes

HERE
Why do they play "Cosmic Plague" at the beginning and the end of the set? And why "Teenage Time Killer" twice in a row? I have no idea, but this set screams.

REMAINS

artist: REMAINS (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA)
venue: ??
location: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
date: ?? 1983
length: 8 minutes

HERE
Only two tracks here and the quality is pretty shit, but FUCK is "Kids Of The Night" an absolute classic. Seriously - who is this band?!

THE DAMNED

artist: THE DAMNED (London, ENGLAND)
venue: 100 Club
location: London, ENGLAND
date: 21 September 1976
length: 17 minutes

HERE
Just four songs on this recording, taken from Day 2 of the legendary 100 Club Punk Special. Show featured STINKY TOYS, VIBRATORS (playing with some other dude), THE DAMNED, BUZZCOCKS.

DEAD BOYS

artist: DEAD BOYS (New York City, New York, USA)
venue: WNYU
location: New York City, New York, USA
date: November 1985
length: 26 minutes

HERE
Radio interview leading up to their 10th anniversary show at Irving Plaza that includes a few cuts from DEAD BOYS related acts. The second track is a borderline racist and homophobic comedy sketch between the two most famous "misters" of the '80s: Mr. T and Mr. Rogers. I have no idea if the sketch and the interview are related in any way, but they were in sequence on the tape, so there you go.

TUFF DARTS

artist: TUFF DARTS (New York City, New York, USA)
venue: CBGB's
location: New York City, New York, USA
date: ?? 1976
length: 32 minutes

HERE
Isn't it interesting how much first wave punk really does just sound like high energy rock 'n roll? Like, I'm sure these dudes probably hated Bob Seger, but listen to TUFF DARTS and tell me that they didn't all have essentially the same damn record collections and/or influences.

UNION CARBIDE PRODUCTIONS

artist: UNION CARBIDE PRODUCTIONS (Göteborg, SWEDEN)
venue: ??
location: Brussels, BELGIUM
date: 02 March 1988
length: 40 minutes

HERE
Link includes a Swedish radio broadcast interview and several tracks played on air (live and studio).  It never clicked for me how much this band sounds like STOOGES and FLUID, and in turn how much FLUID remind me of a super polished STOOGES.

CIRCLE JERKS

artist: CIRCLE JERKS (Los Angeles, California, USA)
venue: Pop Shop // Greystone Hall
location: Cleveland, Ohio // Detroit, Michigan (USA)
date: 11 November 1983 // 13 November 1983
length: 69 minutes

HERE
Two sets from the same tour.....
The Cleveland gig feels pretty low energy - crazy long gaps between songs and a borderline pathetic Keith Morris rant ("why don't you give US a fukkn break man?? We've had equipment problems tonight, we can't even fuckin' play up here because there's so many people up on the stage..." - nothing like an armchair quarterback 26 years later, right?), but they still rip. Detroit mix is a little rawer, but the band is absolute fire (check the hi-hat on "Operation" for fukk's sake). One of the best '80s North American punk/HC bands at their height.

R.Z.M.

artist: R.Z.M. (Las Vegas, Nevada, USA)
venue: ??
location: Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
date: ?? 1983
length: 34 minutes

HERE
After a somewhat embarrassing cover of "State Violence, State Control" that really just reinforces how that song is about two minutes longer than it needs to be, R.Z.M. rip through eleven tracks of high energy US hardcore. Had never heard of this band, and can find no information other than a couple of mentions in stories about '80s Las Vegas punk history.

THE DIODES

artist: THE DIODES (Toronto, Ontario, CANADA)
venue: Horseshoes
location: Toronto, Ontario, CANADA
date: ?? June 1980
length: 57 minutes

HERE
Recorded for "Thursday Night Live" radio broadcast, with top notch sound quality and mix as a result. The guitar is screaming and dreamy.

BAD BRAINS

artist: BAD BRAINS (Washington, DC, USA)
venue: Max's Kansas City
location: New York City, New York, USA
date: ?? February 1979
length: 45 minutes

HERE
Notable not only for their well documented screaming energy, but for the hilariously long gaps in between songs. 30 seconds is an eternity on stage when nothing is happening, but I guess when you go that hard you need a break every now and then...or after almost every song? Pretty sure that the version of "I" that opens this collection is from a different set, and it sounds like this recording was likely mixed from the board. I can't imagine that this set isn't floating around the internet already, but here it is again...worth your time if only for Dr. Know's scathing guitar, which was apparently on absolute fukkn fire in February 1979.

ARTIMUS PYLE

artist: ARTIMUS PYLE (San Francisco, California, USA)
venue: ??
location: ??
date: 09 September 2000
length: 13 minutes

HERE
Recorded at the wedding reception and/or party for Adam and Josie, the main folks responsible for keeping Mission Records alive in San Francisco against all odds (and, likely, better judgement). Chances are good this was recorded at Mission Records, but I can't be sure. "Smash The State" cuts off at the end of the first side of the tape, also - I really like that one Lisa Stansfield song.

HEARTBREAKERS

artist: HEARTBREAKERS (New York City, New York, USA)
venue: Mothers
location: New York City, New York, USA
date: 28 December 1975
length: 30 minutes

HERE
If the sticker on the tape is correct, this was recorded at the height of HEARTBREAKERS' initial run in 1975. The set is loose (as one would expect), and features killer versions of "Love Comes In Spurts" and "Blank Generation," in case you ever doubted that Hell was cooler than Thunders. Left channel is spotty for the first few tracks.

THE CURE

artist: THE CURE (Crawley, West Sussex, ENGLAND)
venue:
location: Amsterdam, Paris, ??
date: 1979/1980
length: 80 minutes

HERE
A live set from Amsterdam, perhaps recorded in 1980. Quality here starts off pretty poor, but clears up a couple of minutes into the first track, though it stays rather tinny. I suspect this was initially recorded to cassette from a radio broadcast. Three early versions of tracks from PORNOGRAPHY follow, and then an oft traded French television performance from 1979 (which is clearly the real gem here - particularly Robert Smith's guitar wizardry in "Killing An Arab").

COSMIC PSYCHOS

artist: COSMIC PSYCHOS (Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA)
venue: Melbourne University
location Melbourne, Victoria,  Australia
date: 01 June 1988
length: 22 minutes

HERE
Tape of a live show broadcast on 3-LO FM Radio. Absolutely blistering show, complete with a few censor beeps during the dirty bits.

THE NUNS

artist: THE NUNS (San Francisco, California, USA)
venue: Mabuhay Gardens
location: San Francisco, California, USA
date: 19 December 1987
length: 47 minutes

No question that the late 1980s were ten years remived from the most important era for THE NUNS, but save the ill advised "Gimme Danger" cover, this set is still shit hot. Even though it was recorded a year after the release of Rumania, it seems obvious that the band new what their fans wanted. Also - Alejandro Escovedo was a founding member of THE NUNS, which attaches their legacy to SANTANA, RANK & FILE, SHIELA E., THE ZEROS and who the fukk knows how many others.

YOUTH BRIGADE

artist: YOUTH BRIGADE (Washington DC, USA)
venue: O'Banion's
location: Chicago, Illinois, USA
date: 03 August 1981
length: 27 minutes

HERE
Just over 20 of their 27 minutes on stage were spent playing songs, the rest of the time was complaining about mirror balls and the lights and about how no one was dancing...including a solid minute of whining after the first 0:36 second song was complete. Loose, unhinged, hardcore. Sharing the bill were MINOR THREAT and NECROS.

HÜSKER DÜ

artist: HÜSKER DÜ (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, USA)
venue: 1st Avenue
location: Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
date: ?? 1985
length: 64 minutes

HERE
A pre-Candy Apple Grey recording featuring a healthy selection of tracks from Flip Your Wig and New Day Rising, this is probably from 30 January 1985 though the set list differs slightly form listings online and a few scattered videos. Not an impossible to find artifact, and well past their well documented hardcore fury, but this recording is still shit hot fire....and dropping a four plus minute version of the Elvis standard "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care)" near the end of the set when you know the punks wanted something to slam dance to is a straight baller move.
